Populismo y literatura: mapeando el debate sobre Soumission de Houellebecq [Edición bilingüe: español – inglés]

El reciente aumento del populismo es un tema que ha sido ampliamente investigado, particularmente en el campo de la ciencia política (Laclau, 2005; Mudde, 2017; Müller, 2016; Žižek, 2006). Sin embargo, surge la pregunta sobre si el populismo debiese ser considerado sólo como un fenómeno puramente político o si puede ser también estudiado desde una perspectiva cultural: por ejemplo, a través de la literatura, el cine y la cultura visual. La relación entre populismo y cultura se ve normalmente como una de exclusión mutua: el populismo descarta a la cultura como desperdicio de tiempo y dinero, mientras que la cultura percibe y representa al populismo como su Otro perturbador. Pero, por otra parte, el propio uso activo que el populismo hace de la cultura tiende a subestimarse.

En el presente artículo, ilustraremos estos aspectos analizando la recepción de una controvertida novela, a saber, Soumission de Michel Houellebecq (2015). Este texto ha sido ampliamente investigado por los académicos (Jones 2016; Rosenthal 2015; Spieser-Landes 2017); al mismo tiempo, se le ha prestado mucha menos atención académica a la apropiación cultural del texto por parte de políticos y medios de comunicación populistas. Al mapear el debate público acerca de Soumission a través de una amplia gama de fuentes (reseñas, artículos de periódicos, entrevistas, etc.), ilustraremos cómo los populistas franceses han utilizado la novela de Houellebecq para definir su propia agenda política, con un énfasis particular en la supuesta ‘Islamización‘ o ‘Africanización‘ de Europa. Por otra parte, veremos que estas interpretaciones populistas no logran abarcar la complejidad de la obra.
