Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published and it is not under consideration by any other journal (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • Whenever possible, URLs are provided for the references.
  • Italics are used instead of underlining (except for URLs), and all illustrations, figures and tables are placed in the appropriate places of text, rather than at the end.
  • The text has the stylistic and bibliographic requirements included in the Author Guidelines/as, which is found in Submissions.
  • The article has been prepared with the MS Word template which can be found in point 5 of the Guidelines for Authors.
  • In the case of sending the text to the peer-reviewed section, the instructions included in To ensure an anonymous evaluation must be followed.

Author Guidelines

All works submitted to be evaluated must comply with the following Author Guidelines:

1. Submissions must be original and unpublished; they must have academic and social interest. It is forbidden to submit works that were already published in any other format. It is also prohibited to submit works already submitted to other journals or editorial bodies.

Clarification on preprints: The journal PERSPECTIVAS DE LA COMUNICACIÓN (PdC) accepts manuscripts that have been published in preprint servers, such as SCIELO Preprints. A preprint can be a manuscript that has not yet been subjected to formal peer review under a scientific journal or an article already accepted by a journal but not yet published; status is commonly known as “in press”. PdC only accepts preprints which have not yet been peer-reviewed. Obviously, PdC DOES NOT ACCEPT preprints when they are articles in press, that is, they have already been peer-reviewed by another scientific journal and have been accepted for publication in that journal. PdC strongly advices new writers to submit their manuscripts as preprints to SCIELO Preprints prior to submitting them to PdC for their formal review. Publication in SCIELO Preprints ensures a certain quality standard and, according to SCIELO Mexico, allows for the reception of comments from peers which may help to improve the manuscript.

2. The journal PERSPECTIVAS DE LA COMUNICACIÓN does not accept submissions via email. The article submission must be made through this website. If you are not registered yet, register. In case you have a user and password to this web, sign in and send your work.

In step 3 of the submission form (“Enter your submission metadata”), you must enter the following information: Author‘s full name, each author‘s institution, e-mail, city and country. Also, in the “Biographical sketch” section, each author should specify his/her postgraduate Academic degrees achieved. It is also necessary to include each authors‘ ORCID. THIS INFORMATION MUST NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE ARTICLE ITSELF IN ORDER TO GUARANTEE AN ANONYMOUS EVALUATION.

3. Scientific communication texts and articles must have a minimum of 15 pages and a maximum of 30.

4. This journal accepts and publishes articles in Spanish, French, English, Italian and Portuguese.

5. Authors should download and use this template file to prepare their manuscripts.

6. The journal PERSPECTIVAS DE LA COMUNICACIÓN publishes scientific articles, documents and reviews, but only articles are peer-reviewed. We accept the following types of articles: quantitative, qualitative, mixed, reviews, theoretical and case studies. In order to give structure to each of these types of articles, please take into high consideration the instructions you can find on the final pages of our Microsoft Word template for manuscript formatting. On the same template you can also find instructions for writings reviews to be submitted to this journal. There are no specific instructions for documents since they are not peer-reviewed and intend to provide a space for thoughts and reflections needed in the field of Communication, which can hardly be published in the form of scientific articles.

7. All works must have its title in both Spanish and English.

8. The abstracts for articles and documents must be provided in both English and Spanish and must not be longer than 250 words.

9. Both abstract in English and “resumen” in Spanish must include a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 keywords in both languages (more information on this in the Microsoft Word template).

10. If your work includes images or illustrations, these must have a minimum size of 500 pixels on their shorter side and must be placed in their respective location, instead of at the end of the text.

11. Tables, images, figures and appendixes must be included within the text where they belong and not at the end of the article. They must be numerically correlated and their source must be made explicit as an image caption, even if its source are the authors themselves. The size of tables, images and such must be enough that they can be comfortably read.

12. Footnotes must follow a single correlated numeration throughout the entirety of the work. These can only be used to provide information that cannot be included within the text itself in cases where it is strictly necessary.

13. Bibliographical references must follow the APA 7 standard. In the Microsoft Word template which authors must use for their submissions, there is more information on how to cite and present the cited references. However, we strongly advice the use of a reference management software (such as Zotero, Endnote, etc.) for citations and references.

14. Articles must end with the epigraph “Bibliographic references” (by extension, these references will also include magazines and websites) which must contain only used works, in alphabetical order by author (PERSPECTIVAS DE LA COMUNICACIÓN reviews references and deletes those which are not used within the text). In some specific works it is convenient to include, next to the year of the used edition, the year of the first edition of the publication.

Examples:

Book:

Dijk, T. A. V. (1992). La ciencia del texto: un enfoque interdisciplinario. 2a reim. Paidós.

Magazine Article:

van Dijk, T. A. (2017). How Globo media manipulated the impeachment of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. Discourse & Communication, 11(2), 199-229. https://doi.org/10.1177/1750481317691838

We again advice authors the use of a reference management software (we recommend Zotero or Endnote) when inserting bibliographical references. If the author chooses to include references manually, there is more information -including examples- on how to do so following the APA 7 guidelines on the APA Style Website. There is also information in Spanish in the template authors must use for submitting to this journal.

15. The author/s retain/s the copyright of their work and grant the journal the right of first publication. For this purpose, the author/s must check the box found in the "Notice of Copyright" section of the article submission form. This can only be accessed by authors who have previously registered in this website. You can register here.

16. Papers that do not comply with the requirements described above will not be subject to the evaluation process.

17. Conflict of interests. When a work is submitted, authors are responsible of acknowledging and revealing any conflict, whether economical or other, that may have influenced their work.

18. Financial support. It is mandatory to acknowledge in the manuscript any financial support or any personal or economical relationship regarding the submitted research, clearly stating its origin (financing institution, project code, etc.)

19. Authorship Declaration - CRediT: Manuscripts with more than one author must include an authorship declaration using the CRediT taxonomy.

Reviews

Reviewed books must be publications edited within the previous three years to the number‘s publication date, including the same year. Each review must include the full information about the work (page numbers and ISBN) and may not exceed 3 pages long.

Similarity Check

Every manuscript received in our journal undergoes a similarity check through the Similarity Check service of Crossref and iThenticate.

Changes to the list of authors

Any changes to the list of authors must be approved by all authors, including those who have been removed from the list. The main contact author should act as a point of contact between the editor and the other authors and should keep co-authors informed and involved in important publication decisions. We reserve the right to request confirmation that all authors meet authorship criteria. All of this applies only until acceptance for publication; once the manuscript is accepted, no changes to the list of authors will be accepted.

Guidelines regarding articles derived from a doctoral thesis

If the article to be submitted is based on research from a doctoral thesis, we recommend following these instructions for a better evaluation of your article:

  • Notify the journal about the original doctoral thesis, preferably including a link to its online location.
  • The research data should preferably be no more than 2 years old.
  • The article must adhere to all the standard formatting requirements of our journal.
  • Do not copy and paste entire paragraphs of your thesis. It is necessary to rewrite and adapt the contents of the thesis to the structure and length of a scientific article. It will be difficult to accept manuscripts derived from theses with a similarity index greater than 20%.
  • Review and update tables and figures, aiming to add value to the original work.
  • Update the bibliography to stay current with the latest advancements. The updated bibliography could lead to an interesting discussion or analysis of the latest trends.
  • Whenever possible, include the thesis supervisor as a co-author of the article. This should generate a new opportunity for collaboration and learning between teacher and student, in addition to increasing the chances that the manuscript will be of higher academic quality.
