Introduction: This article raises the need to incorporate the affective and emotional dimensions into communication theories. Based on a review of classical theories and contributions such as cultural studies and approaches that address interpersonal communication, it critiques the omission of the affective and emotional dimensions in communication thought. The reflections are inscribed within proposals such as the Affective Turn in Social Sciences and incorporate contributions from the sociology and anthropology of emotions and bodies. It begins with the need to break with the binarism and dichotomies of reason-emotion and body-mind, among others, to understand communication as a process of meaning production that cannot omit the emotional. Objectives: To examine the presence of the affective and emotional dimension in both classical and contemporary communication theories and to reflect on the gaps and possibilities of this perspective in the field of communication theories. Methodology: As this is an essay, the methodology is fundamentally a documentary review and analysis and interpretation of documents. Results: This documentary research reveals a notable omission of the affective and emotional aspects in communication theories. In addition to a review of classical traditions in the study of communicative phenomena, it also includes a brief review of some recent proposals and conceptualizations that reflect the potential of the emotional and affective aspects in the analysis of communicative acts, which today primarily involve digital technologies. Conclusions: The discussion offered in this essay broadens the debate surrounding the object of the study of communication and, above all, regarding the perspectives that have historically been omitted from communication research despite having great explanatory potential for communicative phenomena.
