Introduction: Folkcommunication theory becomes an important foundation for reflections on contemporary reality immersed in highly technologized communication procedures. This is especially true for the communicative practices of subaltern social groups, as it provides an understanding of various segments of society and locates the actors within their processes and relationships. Objectives: to highlight the relevance and timeliness of this theory and to understand cultural expressions and their agents as producers of counter-hegemonic communication. It argued that the study of these groups implies recognizing the importance of the cultural production expressed by them in order to reveal their knowledge, wisdom, ideas, and ethical and aesthetic values, their way of life and relationships, through their own means of communication, with methods of production, mediation, and manifestation that position them in the social arena. Methodology: based on references from the field of Folkcommunication, the article provides a descriptive analysis of the problem. Discussion: in these terms, it considers that the study of these groups implies recognizing the importance of their cultural production, their methods of elaboration, intervention, and presence; and in corroborating cultural expressions and their agents, energized by folk activism with counter-hegemonic communication in different spaces of the social arena. Conclusion: it is, therefore, being involved in the dynamics of this process that makes the relevance of Folkcommunication theory relevant today.
