Abstract

This paper proposes that a documentary should not be defined regarding the relation its content has with the world where the documentary is seen, i.e. regardless wether its content is “true”, since a documentary is not a documentary because its content is true. That is how we can escape the dangerous dichotomy true/false and properly understand the following problematic cases: documentary in conditional tense, conspirational theory documentary, militaristic propaganda, animated documentary and pornography. Throug the gap between a statement and its enunciation, studied by Jacques Lacan in Seminar XI, documentary can be studied deeply as a commitment with the enunciation beyond the statement. As problematic cases, they are crucial to understand fiction and non-fiction, and also to understand how we make sense out of the world and how we put the limits on the discursive construction of truth.
