National news programs are traditional institutions in television around the world. This research, based on 12 focus groups on the eight prime-time news programs of the four main Argentinean cities, asks about the role of these programs in the current media ecosystem and in particular, about the consumption of news about crime. We argue that individuals consume news through different media throughout the day. Both through incidental and active consumption, they accumulate topics and attributes without an order or hierarchy. The nightly news has the role of ordering that news, establishing a particular hierarchy among topics, discerning the true from the false. Although this is not exclusive to news about crime, it is particularly evident in these news, given the preoccupation with the subject and the large amount of news on such topics. In this way, the newscast is mutating its traditional role and, despite the diversity of media offerings, reinforces its credibility as a news genre and its role in constructing personal and social agendas.
