Sexualized stereotypes of woman and man in publicity
Keywords:
publicity, stereotypes, students, brandAbstract
Publicity portrays men and women as sexual objects. This research analyzes college students‘ opinions on publicity. The students were shown publicity images of different brands and products. In the pictures the models wear clothes, made postures and facial gestures associated with sexuality. The respondents declared that the displayed product had no relation with sex. The surveyed agreed that men and women are used as sexual objects on publicity advertisement. However, images of women are used more frequently. This research proved that stereotypes of men and women in a sexual connotation are easily recognizable. The publicity pictures reinforced the idea of beauty and youth as important values, while not even the brand is remembered by the surveyed students. Critical thinking must be taught at home and school in order to understand unhealthy images shown in publicity. The pictures portrayed by brands are not positive for human development.
